Matt is leaving Broadcom in 2.5 weeks. He has been quite inspiring at times. He knows how to run a show. As a program manager he is very polite, understanding. He is very good at getting things done without bugging or driving people crazy.

Writing Emails: If you are writing emails to somebody for an appointment there should be something which would attract him or make him want to meet you.

Not telling anything is the worst. That creates uncertainity. I had mailed prof jain for an appointment without telling anything. I should have at least mentioned a little about the purpose. And better if its something which is of interest..

I learnt a big lesson from the Korea trip. This was a story of unsuccess in this trip for a change. The lesson is that, when you are solving some important problem or major issue and you are working very hard and smart, you should have everybody forwarded in that email.

While solving the blocky issue in Korea, when I was sending those amazing mails, I should have had them copied to the LG support list. I missed out a big opportunity of recognition of my work..

I was again asked by Arun to write an article:

His ideas about writing articles is amazing: You language should be as simple as possible. You are not trying to bowl the reader out by using flashy words. You are trying to explain the situation as completely as possible in the simplest possible english. This is an art and takes time to acquire, but its a good thing.

Also, I realized that some people always give a soothing effect to you when you talk to them. Simplicity is definately one of their qualities. You should also try to have the effect of reducing people's anxiety and inspiring and motivating them.

I again realized today. If I do just 1 simple thing in life I can be an amazing performer. If I set time limit for me to complete things I would PHODOFY everything.

Arun has asked me to complete the 2000 - 3000 page article coherently and well written in 3 (i got it extended to 4 hours) hours and he says its easy, its nothing. I know I am going to try my best to complete it in 4 hours and in fact before that.

REASON: You know why it is important ??? The reason is that I always like to do things perfectly. But that is bound to take a whole lot of time. Thats kills the whole purpose. So I should have time limit for things I do. I would do them good even if I have time limits.

Saina told me about the basics of relationship yesterday. There were some really good things she told me.
- Pay Attention,. Paying attention to what 1 likes and dislikes and then reflecting it. Buying small gifts which reflect it, means a lot. He bought a pink flower for her, when she had told before that she liked pink.
- Being truthfull and not playing games.
- Communicate and be available. No matter what comes in his way, he is there for her. If he says he is going to call he does. If he receives a call. No matter what he is doing he would hang up. If he has programmes of going with friends he would cancel and be there. He drove hours and was tired but still played golf, just because she mentioned that she wanted to do it.
Say lovely things.
- Make her feel wanted. By taking advice and sharing things. Don't give them a feeling that you think they are dumb. And don't think they are dumb.
- Comfort her and make her at ease about things.

Another thing I liked was her answer about my unsolved universe mystery. Her dream describing that she came across a never ending book and ran away with a pocket edition of it from a library was amazing. And it was so true, that we are all a part of god. The part of god inside us is very pure and is the source of all knowledge and has all the answers we need. And may be everything is connected from inside. And, Of course, the analogy comparing it with the flatland and sphere was very appropriate.

The 1 unsolved mystery of mine i got solved was the mystry of missing something. I found out why i don't miss ppl. back at home. I found out that I missed someone or something, if i got a lot of something and that was suddenly cut-off. So you miss someone when say you get a lot of attention from someone and it is suddenly cut-off.

Some points of negotiation / discussion :

I was retrospecting on my last few conversations with office attendents. I realised that my approach has been faulty. It can be much better. In fact the latest setback (the $300 useless parking ticket) triggered this.

1. Firstly I need to be very cool, calm and patient. I should not think that there are other people standing or that receptionists time is imp. (or some crap like that). Your calmness has a effect on the person you are talking to and hence also makes them calm and willing to listen.

2. Being happy and light is also good. It dosen't hurt in anyway to think that whoever you talk to should be touched by you.

3. The most important thing is not to give up at any cost. Bahut pyar se baat karo but NO QUESTION of leaving without being properly satisfied. Hilna hi nahin hai ... kuch bhi kar lo. And be very assertive, totally beleiving that you deserve it. Talk to supervisor.. say that the system is faulty. Basically attack totally ... but ..pyar se. And look like a thoughtfull, relentless and confident person.

4. Its also impostant to use common sense, like for eg. talking to the right person., putting the points in the right way. Basically, being strategically very sound.

And basically just be happy ..and enjoy it. Life goes on.....

I bought CAR at kbb price, when almost all of my friends took it 500-1000 below kbb. Its OK that i was in a hurry. But i could have shown a little more patience, searched a little bit more. Importance of logs:

I have realised that i should maintain logs of the things i do. I maintained a research log, that was really helpfull. I maintained a log of meetings with prof, that was also very usefull. Similarly i should maintain my TA log. etc etc..

Logs save you from learning your lessons again and again. The lessons you learn once become yours... you do not forget them and do mistkes again to relearn them.

Importance of archiving:

I have realised that i should maintain an archive of every work i do. I should preserve the books and all the files I have for any perticular project. Because i always configure a very good work environment, and i cover a lot rather than spending a lot of time on small parts. And mainly because i have a short term memory and i keep on changing projects and interests.
So its all the more imp to me. Good eg. TAC programme, Bad eg. IITB summer training, GRE

I always have starting problem for writing something or starting a simulation etc. Best thing to do at that point is to start reading about things related to that, or start reading back.

When you do a Phd. it does not mean that you would do a job only in that area. It means that you have gone through a process of taking up a tough problem and finding your ways out of good and bad times.

So it prepares you to be able to handle any other problem in life, attack it, and systematically crack it. When you feel you are capable of that you are a Phd.

Today i learn 1 more thing from Pablo. He did arvo assign, completing each part completely and correctly at a time. That a great way to do work.
I did not do things properly in my thesis coding. So now when i am going back to comment the old programmes, i need to do the same in all the code based on it. If my primitive programmes were well documented and structured all other programmes based on them would not require changes.

Do things completing each step one at a time finishing it perfectly. Perfect enough to be relied upon.

But you know !! i think that whatever has happened is all good. I have really enjoyed my time at UCI. Some time for myself. Letting myself think whatever i want giving all the time and attention. Doing a lot of things that came to my mind on a fly. Trying to find my rhythm at my work and study and seeing where, what and why things go wrong. Found a lot more intricate things about the way i should work. Sort of fine tuning all those remaining things or joining all the missing links. So now for me, Its just a matter of putting it all together and following.

And i should remember that i am the mohit who was not looking for some univ. etc. I had decided to live my life truely and honesty listening to my heart. Never worrying about the situations, rather living each moment of life with heart and courage. Never caring about whether i am good or bad at something, or whether i am winning or loosing, just giving my best and enjoying and laughing at whatever i get out of it. Proud of my decisions whatever they are, cause they are my decisions. Being may be not the best at something but being the best learner or even if not that being very happy about whatever i am. Living the life as if today was the last day of my life.

Today i am feeling a bit bad. I have taken some very bad decisions in my life lately. And the resoning which i used in taking those decisions was really .... i don't like it. Basically why did i come to UCI ? When my seniors and now my juniors are going to the top 10 and 20 univs, and i took UCI. My reasoning was that i am not going to work in US so why does the university in US matters and I have IIT for india. But the bad part was the fear that even if i am graduating from the best university and then i am not able to perform according to the expextations, then its no use. I was basically a bit scared that after i pass from say the best univ. i would not be able to live up to the expectations from me. I thought that , then i would go to another very competitive place cause of the univ. and i would be stuck for ever under the pressure to perform. So i toned down my level. This way i can enjoy my life and work also. basically working at a level just below my capacity i would get such a lot of time for myself to live my life and think about things i want to do in my life and how i want it to go.
YES! i have got that but nooo ... this is not what i want.
I could have easily been in any top 10 univ., and yes it matters to me, it matters to me a lot. I am a person who wants only the best, compromises don't fascinate me at all. I have made some compromises earlier and i don't want them anymore. If there is a very hard path and a easy path and if one leads to 2nd place and the other to 1st, i want the hard path. I want to fight and fight my best to get what i want, so that when i get it ,if i get it, i am not half happy thinkng that "this was not actually what i wanted".
Coming to my decision of UCI, i should have gone for the medal and CPI , rather then thinking that carrer is that what's more important. Huuuh!! i had all the time in the world to build my career, but that medal was once in the life opportunity. I should have worked hard on my courses, BTP, sports, managment at IITg. I could have gone for a year of job at some company and then could have come to the best univ. in the world. That way i would have much better academic record, satisfaction of completing my work properly, and working in one of the best univ. of world.
A problem is that at times i have not beleived in myself. I had that ability when i joined Undergrad, i also had that ability when i joined masters. And yes, if you want to be at that level you have to work hard, everything dosen't come easy. Basically if you want to work at a level competitive for you, you have to strain yourself a bit. Don't run away ... face it.. its fun.
Lets see what i do now...

My struggles began in 1989 when I was suffering from Graves' Disease.
It left me constantly exhausted but it should have been a time when I was at the peak of my career.

Everyone assumes I am a hurdler but I have never won a hurdle Olympic gold medal.
But that doesn't make me crawl into a corner and say "I'm not going to do that again".
Dedication is all you need
Anything worth having is worth working for, whether that means early nights or doing extra training.
When you work towards something and you accomplish that goal, there's no greater feeling in the world.

Hopping in your course material is a good thing to prevent you from getting bored. I used
this strategy to successfully complete the GRE wordlists in a very fast and efficient way. And
only i can tell how difficult a task that was for me.

The idea is keep working on the whole thing at the same time and shifting the emphasis from
one part to another whenever you get bored untill you master it all.
